Integrating GIS into farmland preservation policy and decision making
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper describes an experiment with the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) into farmland preservation techniques using the data and policies of Hunterdon County, NJ as a case study. The automation process incorporates a variety of factors as criteria for evaluating properties for a purchase of development rights. The spatially explicit criteria include evaluations of the soils, neighboring land uses, proximity to preserved farms, and local communities’ commitment to practices contributing to sustaining farming. This automation is particularly notable in that it uses a parcel-based approach at a county-wide scale. This supports both an assessment of individual farms and a broad understanding of policy outcomes and pattern across the entire county. More interesting are the emerging pattern of benefits and barriers in the automation process highlighted by this exploration. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Building a maintenance policy through a multi-criterion decision-making model
A major competitive advantage of production and service systems is establishing a proper maintenance policy. Therefore, maintenance managers should make maintenance decisions that best fit their systems. Multi-criterion decision-making methods can take into account a number of aspects associated with the competitiveness factors of a system. This paper presents a multi-criterio...
متن کاملModelling farmland conversion integrating multi-agent systems and resource economics theory
Farmland conversion, i.e. conversion of farmland into non-agricultural construction land, is an unavoidable trend in global economic development(Fazal 2001; Tan et al. 2005; Bugri 2008). In China, which is relatively short of farmland resources and yet in the phase of accelerating urbanization, conversion of farmland is closely related to national food security, ecological security as well as s...
متن کاملAnnual Water Yield Estimation for Different Land Uses by GIS-Based InVEST Model (Case Study: Mish-khas Catchment, Ilam Province, Iran)
Fresh water supply and its security encounter a high level of fluctuating variability under global climate changes. To address these concerns in catchment water management, a good understanding of land use/cover impacts on the hydrological cycle affecting water supply is crucial. The objective of this study is to define a model to investigate the impact of existing land use/cover on water yield...
متن کاملCollaborative Geographic Information Systems: Origins, Boundaries, and Structures
This chapter describes the origins, boundaries, and structures of collaborative geographic information systems (CGIS). A working definition is proposed, together with a discussion about the subtle collaborative vs. cooperative distinction, and culminating in a philosophical description of the research area. The literatures on planning and policy analysis, decision support systems, and geographi...
متن کاملHedonic Price Analysis of Easement Payments in Agricultural Land Preservation Programs
More than 110 state, county, and local governments have implemented agricultural land preservation programs to permanently preserve farmland. Assigning a value to the development is difficult and can be costly. Data was collected on 409 preservation transactions from 3 Maryland counties and supplemented with farm level spatial data via GIS. A hedonic price analysis is conducted to determine the...
